Way overdue, but I finally have posted my SXSW photos to flickr.
Amy and I gave our panel on the first day of SXSW interactive and it was a blast. It was nice to have it out of the way so we could chill and enjoy the rest of the week. Despite a one day sickness that I warded off (and developed into South By Scurvy upon my return to DC) I was out and about at the conference center and Sixth Street Environs.
Here’s the breakdown of Photos:

and finally, but not least of all, Paramore at La Zona Rosa

The Future of Web Apps conference in London was a week or so ago, and I’ve finally gotten the photos online in a photoset at Flickr. Enjoy!

I’ve been quite behind in getting photographs up into Flickr and I’m starting to get back on track after being on the road for most of the last month. Here’s the photos from Honor by August’s trip to Los Angeles when we played the Viper Room.
London pix coming soon!

My little brother graduated Walsingham Academy on Saturday. I went to college when he was started first grade, so it’s been a bit odd to think of him graduating and moving on to college. He’ll be attending VCU’s art school in Richmond, Virginia this fall.
Post ceremony we did the family portrait. Would someone let me know what they fed me to make me taller than everyone else?

Submitted to JPG Issue 11: Are You Ready to Rock. Is it a good fit? Vote Now! (Photo is of Emily Haines of Metric at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC)
Please vote for my image of Emily Haines of Metric in the JPG Magazine submission. I’d appreciate it!
Last week I posted an image up on flickr as part of the 365 Days project. Justin suggested I take the photo and mess with it in Photoshop. “It’s screaming frank-miller-filter of something,” he said.
Hmm. Frank Miller filter. Sin City. Cool posterized-yet-not look. Sure!
So I opened up my trusty Photoshop CS3 Beta and got to work.
So if you look at Sin City, you have super contrast on all the characters, but there’s a little bit of gradient. Just the posterize filter isn’t enough. It’s that micro detail that makes it shine.
Original Image
The first step is to get rid of the color and set yourself up with a good black and white clean plate. To do this I used Image > Calculations. This lets you do a variety of layer operations by juxtaposing two channels as layers. I played around with them until I found something I liked. My settings (your milage may vary) were Blue in Channel 1 and Red in Channel 2 with the Overlay transfer mode at 100%. Remember that the blue channel will always have the most grain in it, even on a digital shot.
Black and White
From the base black and white image, I created three layers. The first I left alone, the second I applied the “stamp” filter to (tweaking the settings to get the lines where I wanted them), and to the third, the “torn edges” filter, again tweaking to taste.

Torn Edges
Now all that was left was to mix them up. Turn both filtered layers to overlay and bam: You have yourself the comic book look. Tint skin to yellow at your discretion.

Enjoy!

Emily Haines, the lead singer of Metric, came through town with her band “The Soft Skeleton” on January 10th and played at the 930 Club. The show was sponsored in part by NPR’s All Songs Considered and you can listen to the archive of it on the NPR site.

Elevator to Space played at IOTA with Down Dexter and Jared from VaCo’s new band, My New Mixtape. I took photos of the show at Arlington’s Iota Club and Café on January 6th.

Cedars and Soft Complex both had CD release parties at The Black Cat in DC on Sept 22nd. I’ve just gotten around to posting the photos, but here’s the sets:

It’s always fun to watch time-lapse video, but my business partner Justin Hankins has taken it to a whole new level. Justin had to write a sixteen-page research paper in 36 hours. So he wrote a Ruby script to have his iSight take a photo every minute. That’s how we roll at Meticulous — like crack children.
You can check out the results (with accompanying soundtrack from Underworld) at Research Paper in 36 hours on YouTube.

Juniper Lane headlined IOTA with Elevator to Space last night in Arlington VA. It was Rich Stine’s (guitarist for E2S) birthday as well, so there was a party to be had. The photos are posted up at my flickr account

Editors and stellastarr came to the 9:30 Club last night and put on a great show. Editors blew the lid of the place with a great performance of their debut album. The energy was pretty wild. The photos are posted up at my flickr account

Yet another Metric show at the 9:30 Club in Washington last night. And here’s my photo picks out of the stuff I shot there. This was an early show, as the Pogues played a show starting at 10pm. This had to be one of the most packed shows I’ve seen these guys play. Putting on a live show like they do tho, it’s not surprising.
If you haven’t checked these guys out yet, you really need to pick up their last two CDs, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? and Live It Out. Well worth every penny.

I went out to take photos of (Leslie) Feist at the Black Cat (aka Le Chat Noir) last night. For those who aren’t familiar, she’s quite the chanteuse. She’s also the main female voice in Broken Social Scene which has burnt a hole in my iPod of late. Shoreline 7/4. Enough said.
